For reading all
students are grouped according to their reading level and instruction is
at their level. Writing
is taught in genres with emphasis on the characteristics of writing, the
audience for the writing and the grammatical features of writing. All
students are given the opportunity to express themselves in Talking and
Listening. Children have practice in speaking to small audiences as well
as larger ones such as assemblies and other school functions. Students participate in the University of NSW English Competition as well as the Basic Skills Test (Yrs 3 and 5) and the Primary Writing Assessment (Yrs 3 and 5). Students attend
Library lessons once a week where a love of
literature is encouraged and research skills are fostered. Senior students are encouraged to enter various writing competitions throughout the year. Recently a number of our Stage Three students received awards for their efforts in Woollahra Council's writing competition, How can we care for our planet locally? Bellevue Hill students enter the Bondi District Debating and Public Speaking Competitions each year. Maths is divided into six strands: Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Space and Geometry, Measurement and Working Mathematically. A variety of resources are used to support the learning of mathematics and there is a high emphasis on problem solving.
