THE CURRICULUM

English

English is divided into three sections: Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.  For reading all students are grouped according to their reading level and instruction is at their level. Writing is taught in genres with emphasis on the characteristics of writing, the audience for the writing and the grammatical features of writing. All students are given the opportunity to express themselves in Talking and Listening. Children have practice in speaking to small audiences as well as larger ones such as assemblies and other school functions.

Students participate in the University of NSW English Competition as well as the Basic Skills Test (Yrs 3 and 5) and the Primary Writing Assessment (Yrs 3 and 5).

Students attend Library lessons once a week where a love of literature is encouraged and research skills are fostered.

Senior students are encouraged to enter various writing competitions throughout the year. Recently a number of our Stage Three students received awards for their efforts in Woollahra Council's writing competition, How can we care for our planet locally?

Bellevue Hill students enter the Bondi District Debating and Public Speaking Competitions each year.

Maths

Maths is divided into six strands: Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Space and Geometry, Measurement and Working Mathematically.  A variety of resources are used to support the learning of mathematics and there is a high emphasis on problem solving.

In the 2007 University of NSW Mathematics Competition, Bellevue Hill PS received 2 high distinctions, 22 distinctions and 34 credits.

All K - 2 students use Count Me In Too strategies in the Number strand. Concrete materials have been purchased to support this program. Count Me Into Measurement allows students to develop key understandings using practical activities. Many Mathematics activities are integrated with other Key Learning Areas.

Primary students also participate in the University of NSW Maths Competition and the Australian Primary Schools Maths Olympiad.

Science and Technology (S&T)

Science and Technology is integrated into all key learning areas (KLAs) at Bellevue Hill PS.  Students participate in a range of learning experiences that involve observation, questioning, planning, predicting, testing, collecting, recording data and drawing conclusions whilst developing their understanding in content areas such as: hot and cold, direction, communication, nature, human body, mini-beasts, food production, environment, space, weather and  electricity.

Technology is a focus area for the school with a large computer network and computers in every classroom.  Additionally we have a modern computer room which is also used for District training after school.  Software programs are used to support learning in all KLAs and in additional programs such as Russian and Italian.

A scope and sequence for skill development has been developed and implemented and teaching and learning activities incorporate other technologies such as a digital cameras, video camera, scanner etc.

This website was the special project of a year 5/6 class.  The students designed the layout of the homepage, interviewed relevant staff and community members for information, typed the information and taken photographs to support their section of the site.  The animated characters that are around the site are also a student's idea.  Each student designed and animated their own character.

This year, students in Stage 3 are developing digital portfolios that showcase their work in website format.  The individual website is a created using a program called EduWeb and Microsoft FrontPage is used to edit the work.  At the end of the year, each student will take home a CD-ROM containing their portfolio. Look out for samples of their work on this website in the near future.
