PEER MEDIATION

As part of the school leadership and anti-bullying policies, a Peer Mediation program was developed and implemented in 2000.  Trained Peer Mediators assist other students in the playground to solve minor conflicts that they may be experiencing.

Students in year 5 spend two days being trained as mediators.  The training program involves conflict identification, causes and resolution, activities to develop trust and teamwork as well as a step-by-step mediation process.

Following their training, students become Peer Mediators and are rostered to work in the playground at recess or lunchtime.  If students are experiencing a minor conflict, for example, who is using the netball goals, the teacher on duty may refer the students to the Peer Mediators for help solving the problem.  The mediators and the students work through the mediation process to come to a solution that is win-win (both parties win) and then the parties involved sign an agreement.

The program has been very successful in solving minor conflicts and developing student's leadership skills.
