THE PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

Education has changed greatly over the seventy five years that Bellevue Hill Public School has been in existence. Although the traditional curriculum still has an emphasis on English and Mathematics, there are many other aspects which impact on children and what they learn. Curriculum areas now include aspects such as environmental education, drug education, equal opportunity, conflict resolution, anger management and mediation to name a few.

Bellevue Hill Public School has always had an excellent reputation for providing quality education and currently maintains a high academic standard in all subject areas. Results in external assessment, such as the Basic Skills Tests shows that over 90% of children are achieving in the top bands when compared to children across the State of NSW.

The teachers at Bellevue Hill Public School are experienced and conscientious in their efforts to provide a stimulating and relevant curriculum for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The challenge for the teachers is to provide a curriculum, which challenges the minds of gifted children who are already achieving a high level of success and will provide them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will allow them to be confident members of a future society.

To provide programs which cater more for individual students’ interests, needs and abilities, pedagogy needs to change from teacher directed to more student-centred learning. Effective learning will be promoted by children being taught how they learn best and being involved in the learning process e.g. teaching will focus more on catering for the different learning styles of children with teachers collaborating with students and parents in the learning process.

The use of technology in learning will maximize student abilities and will be a vital tool in the provision of quality education for the 21st Century. Students will utilize technology for learning, assessment and reporting their progress.

We are looking forward to the prospects of an exciting new way in which to maximise student learning.
